It’s a sad fact that it’s very hit and miss when hiring a coach at your local gym. I know this better than most – I’ve spent the last 5 years educating and coaching hundreds of the Fitness Industry’s youngest and brightest minds; as well as a lot of the…err…not as bright. I have a pretty simple litmus test for whether or not I feel as though a coach has developed to a decent standard, and that standard is backed off the question – would I trust them to coach my girlfriend, sister, or mother?
If the answer is yes, then I know that they’re worth the investment.
Now, here’s the problem. For every new batch of new coaches that I’d get my hands on, at most, 2 out of 10 of them would reach that level. Let’s not forget that the systems that I use to coach these guys are fantastic. They’re some of the industry-leading coach development programs available to new coaches. In spite of that, only 20% of the coaches that I see graduate on to being ‘good enough’.
That’s a scary thought. And it’s not as if it’s cheap to figure out if a coach at your gym is good or not. At minimum, you’re going to be paying somewhere between $80-110/hour just to find out whether a coach is worth their salt. That’s a lot of money to spend on an outcome that’s not guaranteed.
That’s why, to me at least, online coaching makes sense – you know exactly the quality of the coach that you’re hiring (because you get to read their free content first), and you get them at a fraction of the cost of a face-to-face coach. Win-win, right?
